Inmate convicted of killing Omaha police officer dies at Lincoln prison

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – A man convicted of killing an Omaha police officer in 1970 died at a Lincoln prison Thursday.

The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services said 79-year-old Edward Poindexter died at the Reception and Treatment Center.

The cause of death is unknown, but Poindexter was being treated for a medical condition, officials said.

A grand jury will investigate Poindexter’s death, as required by Nebraska law.

He was serving a life sentence for first-degree murder in Douglas County.

Poindexter and David Rice – both former Black Panthers – lured Officer Larry Minard to a home and detonated a homemade bomb in 1970, the Associated Press reported.

Rice died at the Nebraska State Penitentiary in 2016.
