Construction continues on Lincoln’s newest sports facility.

The Speedway Sporting Village is far from finished, but has come a long way since its June groundbreaking.

“Obviously the buildings went up really fast, we still got some work to do on the outdoor part of the facility but yeah we are nearing completion of the indoor facility,” Co-owner Dr. Robert Lane said.

The $29 million sports complex, which is located southwest of 10th and Van Dorn, will be the biggest of its kind in the region. The field house officially opened on December 1, and has since seen plenty of traffic.

“Any given weeknight we have about 5 or 600 people come through the door,” Lane said.

On Sundays, high school football players scrimmage on the 90,000-square-foot turf field, which is also home to recreational soccer leagues and personal training sessions.

“It’s great, it’s lots of open space for all of us to come out and practice our hands in the off-season and prep for the season next year,” Lincoln Southwest football player Michael Mitchell said.

Management estimates the field house should be completed by the end of January, and will include a weight room, sports performance area and medical offices. Upstairs overlooking the field there will be lounge nooks and concessions.

The next phase of construction will be outside, where ten soccer fields and an indoor basketball center should be finished by the summer, owners say.

“It’s going to be really good for the community,” Lane said.

The plans don’t stop there. Defy Gravity, the indoor trampoline park, should also be finished by the end of next month. Owners say they’re also hoping to add baseball diamonds, outdoor football fields and a disc golf course a couple years down the road.
