‘It made our ears pop’: Dorchester community recovering after severe storm rips roof off building

DORCHESTER, Neb. (KLKN) — Heavy rain and extreme winds coursed through Dorchester on Friday, leaving behind broken branches, damaged roofs and a whole lot of cleaning up.

“We came back inside and next thing we knew, all heck had broken loose,” said Hubert Danielson, a Dorchester native. “It was that fast. It blew through our front like crazy, it was probably 80 mile-an-hour winds. You could actually feel the pressure in our house, it made our ears pop.”

The storm came up very fast for many, and without warning.

Through the high winds, one roof was blown off into a power line.

Hubert and Tracy Danielson said they’ve been without power since around 6 p.m. Friday.

“We just stocked up our fridge from the last storm,” he said. “We had to replace all of those groceries. Looks like we may have to do it again if they don’t get it on pretty soon. We’ve ate enough ice cream for breakfast for awhile. We’ve been playing horseshoes, we’ve been playing outside. Making the best of it, getting some vitamin D.”

Many chose to spend the day helping others clean up and get ahead on their yard work.

And for Lyle Weber, these storms are becoming the new normal.

“It’s rough but what can you do about it? It’s Mother Nature,” he said. “We’ve been without power more this year with the snow we had in the winter time, than in 25 years total. Nothing you can do about it.”
