‘It’s almost nostalgic’: Runza reopens at UNL after seven years away

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKLN) — Runza held a grand opening Monday at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Selleck Dining Center.

To many students and staff, this is not just another fast-food option, but rather a throwback to their childhood or a marker of special things ahead, like game day.

“I’m a local person myself, so growing up, Runza has always been a fan favorite for my family,” said Nate Vandevoord, the assistant manager of Selleck Dining.

The Lincoln-based chain previously spent nearly a decade in the student union of UNL, but due to being outbid by another vendor, it closed down in 2018.

“It’s almost nostalgic, just kind of having it here, knowing we can get it anytime now,” Vandevoord said.

He said with move-in week on campus and many sororities holding their rush week, sales were good on Monday.

There was a steady flow of students like sophomore Kyla Niiyam, who has been waiting for the restaurant to open for weeks.

“One of my friends was texting our group chat about it,” she said, “I’m really excited. I love it when we have some of the chain restaurants here. I love Runzas, especially in the middle of games.”

Vandevoord said this new location has all the classic menu options but only accepts orders through the university’s dining app.

He said it’s easier this way for staff to prepare orders quickly.

This location uses what’s called a ghost kitchen to prepare the food, and then a runner brings it to the front, where students can pick it up.

“I think with today’s age, kids want fast, they want convenient,” Vandevoord said. “And of course, being on mobile orders, kids always being on their phone, it’s just one step easier to get your food.”

Although the restaurant is operated by UNL Dining Services, you don’t need to have a meal plan to order from the Runza.
