‘It’s just nonstop’: Lincoln man captures another crime on camera
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – A Lincoln man caught two crimes on camera in his own backyard.
Someone stole a bike from Darin Byrnes’ yard along 17th and B streets around three weeks ago.
Then on Sunday morning, a man tried to break into his house through the back door.
The man approached the door with a flashlight and tugged at the door handle. But after noticing it was locked, he walked away.
The camera captured his red backpack as he turned away.
Police said they aren’t looking into the case anymore because they don’t have any other evidence.
Byrnes said he’s noticed an increase in crime in the area during the past year.
In the last four weeks, according to Lincoln Police Department data, there have been 109 crimes reported within a half-mile of Brynes’ home.
“In our area, there’s always 10 or 15 reports,” he said. “Bike theft, assault, car theft. It’s just nonstop.”
Byrnes is worried about his family’s safety in the neighborhood.
“I brought up the conversation to my wife,” he said. “She’s like, ‘OK, let’s say he gets in. What’s next?'”
They have three kids, ranging from 6 to college age.
“They are all going in and out, and this guy could’ve totally been around when they are going to work or something like that,” Byrnes said.
He has multiple cameras surrounding his home, but he plans to add more. He is even thinking about getting a bigger dog that could protect his family.
