It’s so cold in Lincoln, People’s City Mission will ‘just let everybody in’

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — With below-zero temperatures comes a crowd of people needing a warm place to stay.

The People’s City Mission in Lincoln is opening its doors to everyone.

“Anybody can come to the mission because we don’t want anybody perishing on the streets,” said Pastor Tom Barber, the shelter’s CEO.

He said the mission has over 300 people right now.

But Barber said it’s prepared for more, with extra workers, food and blankets.

He said even if you’ve been suspended from the shelter, when temperatures are below 30 degrees, you can come from 8 p.m. until 8 a.m.

But if it gets below zero, the mission will “just let everybody in.”

“It makes no difference who they are,” Barber said.

He said winter is the most expensive time of year for the mission — and this year has been more difficult than previous ones.

“Before you had one or two days, maybe, below zero,” he said. “Now we’ve got a week or two, so it’s really been really difficult for us to kind of manage this, but so far we’ve been able to do it.”
