“I’ve been out and it’s been pretty intense”: Lincoln drivers see the impact of the first winter snowfall

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – The Capitol City saw its first snowfall of the season Saturday night, and the streets of Lincoln also saw the impact of it.

Lincoln saw about an inch of snow beginning Saturday afternoon, and lasting until early Sunday morning. Many drivers made sure to take it slow.

“The last couple of nights, and the mornings, I’ve been out and it’s been pretty intense,” said Taylor Mertlik. “Knowing how bad things can get here in Lincoln it’s still making me cautious.”

Forty-eighth street had traffic moving smoothly with what looked like pretty good conditions. As for O street, the roads were a bit more slick — and snowplows are working around the clock paving the way for safer roads.

There are others that didn’t go very far, but still add that it’s important to know how to drive in these snowy conditions.

“The biggest thing is we drive a 4 wheel drive, not a 4 wheel stop.” Jodi Freeman said. “You can get stuck, you need to be very cautious. Drive slowly, and drive carefully.”

Another Lincoln driver said it’s best to spend as little time on the roads as possible.

“If you got something at the store, get it and get home,” said Janet Evans. “Don’t be running around in it. That’s how accidents happen.”

According to LPD, there have been at least 20 crashes from 11 a.m. Saturday to 7 p.m. Sunday in Lincoln.

Most schools are returning Monday for the first time since Christmas, which means more drivers on the roads for the morning commute.
