LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — A man was sentenced on Friday for a quadruple homicide in a small Nebraska town.

Jason Jones, 46, was sentenced to death by a panel of three judges for the murder of four people in Laurel in 2022. With the sentencing, Jones becomes the 12th man on death row in Nebraska.

In September 2024, Jones was convicted of 10 felonies, including four counts of first-degree murder. He was additionally found guilty of four counts of use of a firearm to commit a felony and two counts of second-degree arson.

In addition to the murder charges, Jones got 3-4 years in prison for each of his two arson charges. He was also sentenced to 40-50 years for each of his four firearm charges.

Jones set fires at two Laurel homes on Aug. 4, 2022, after killing the residents: Gene Twiford, 86; Janet Twiford, 85; Dana Twiford, 55; and Michele Ebeling, 53.

He was later arrested at his Laurel home, where he was found with severe burns.  He was taken to a hospital before being lodged in jail.

Jones’ wife, Carrie Jones, is also charged in the case. She was sentenced to life in prison in November for the first-degree murder of Gene Twiford.

Carrie was also sentenced to 5-10 years for tampering with physical evidence and 16 to 20 years for being an accessory to a felony.

Attorney General Mike Hilgers released a statement following the sentencing:

“We are grateful for the work of the three-judge panel and their thorough and well-reasoned order. The panel laid out the horrific details surrounding the quadruple homicide Jason Jones committed and explained why the death penalty is an appropriate sentence under these facts, under the language of the Nebraska statutes, and the history of Nebraska case law where the death penalty was imposed.”
