‘Jeff’s our quarterback’: Matt Rhule stands by Sims after mishaps in Colorado
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Jeff Sims is still Nebraska’s starting quarterback, head coach Matt Rhule confirmed Monday.
But Sims is dealing with an ankle injury, which he suffered in Nebraska’s 36-14 loss against Colorado on Saturday.
“Jeff was unable to practice with the ankle, so we’ll know more about him probably tomorrow or later in the week,” Rhule said.
If Sims is unable to start against Northern Illinois, the duties would be handed off to either Heinrich Haarberg or Chubba Purdy.
Haarberg had one touchdown during Saturday’s loss, but he only threw for 13 yards in six attempts.
“I think both those guys can run the offense,” Rhule said. “Obviously, with where we’re at right now, the offense isn’t doing what we want it to do in general.”

On Saturday, the Huskers couldn’t stop turning over the ball. In total, Nebraska lost three fumbles, and Sims threw an interception.
During and after the game, Husker fans took to social media and called for Rhule to bench Sims, who was responsible for some of the fumbles.
Jeff Sims was the worst decision Matt Rhule made. He has to be benched.

But Rhule is standing by Sims.
“Jeff’s our quarterback,” he said. “But Jeff also has to protect the football.”
