Judge: Woman accused of stabbing Lincoln man with soldering iron not mentally competent

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — A Lancaster County judge ruled Thursday that a woman accused of stabbing a man with a soldering iron is not mentally fit to stand trial.
But Judge Thomas Zimmerman wrote that 50-year-old Lisa Beverly will likely become mentally competent in the “foreseeable future.”
Beverly will be committed to the Lincoln Regional Center, a psychiatric hospital, for treatment.

On Feb. 14, court documents say Beverly held a man against his will in an apartment near 48th and Holdrege streets.
A 911 caller said the man was screaming “Help!” and banging on the wall, according to police.
When officers arrived, they found a 60-year-old Lincoln man bleeding from multiple wounds to the head.
The man told police that Beverly stabbed him between the eyes with a soldering iron, then hit him on the head with a coffee pot and a laptop.
Beverly is charged with second-degree assault, first-degree false imprisonment and use of a deadly weapon to commit a felony.
The judge scheduled another hearing for May 13 to reassess her competency.
