LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – The Junior League of Lincoln (JLL) began their “Giving Love Valentine Diaper Drive” on Tuesday.

The donation drive for the Junior League of Lincoln Diaper Bank goes from Feb. 1-15.

JLL says their goal for the drive is to raise awareness and bring assistance to the thousands of Lancaster County residents who struggle with diaper needs.

JLL will work with the Center for People in Need to collect, store and distribute the free diapers to struggling families.

People can drop off diapers at the following locations:

  • Coffee Roaster: 5022 Old Cheney Rd #3

“Diaper need impacts the physical, mental, and economic wellbeing of children and families,” said Jena Donahue, President of the Junior League of Lincoln. “One in three families with young children in the U.S. struggle with diaper need, and the poorest 20 percent of Americans who buy diapers spend nearly 14 percent of their post-tax income on diapers.”

Donahue says that government safety-net programs do not recognize diapers as a basic need, they belong in a category with cigarettes, alcohol and pet food known as disallowed purchases.

In Nebraska, the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families can be used to purchase diapers, but after covering household bills, little money is available for a good amount of diapers.

“The Junior League of Lincoln has always been dedicated to serving women and children,” said Donahue.
