BOONE CO., Ill. (KLKN) – Loki the K9 was diligently waiting for his partner who was in the middle of a traffic stop when the police vehicle was hit, sending debris flying and leaving Loki mortally wounded.

This happened around 1:30 am on December 27th, and the vehicle that hit the police car is suspected to be a drunk driver.

Loki’s partner and handler, Deputy Robert Rosenkranz, was nearby on the traffic stop when the accident happened and wasn’t seriously hurt, but was hit by some flying debris. The Boone County Sherriff’s Office sends their condolences to the Rosenkranz family and asks for you to keep them in your prayers.

If you wish to donate, the Sheriff’s office says individuals may send donations directly to the Boone County Sheriff’s Office at 615 N. Main St. Belvidere, IL 61008. They add “Please know 100% of the donations received on behalf of K9 Loki will go directly to our K9 program.” There are other people who might be hosting donation drives, but this is guaranteed to go directly to the cause.

The driver of the vehicle who hit the police car was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and was facing multiple citations including driving under the influence.
