Keep your kids safe while trick-or-treating in Lincoln this Halloween

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – With Halloween coming up, parents are starting to set their plans, and Lincoln Police have safety tips.

Of course, there are the obvious things, like not getting in a car with a stranger.

But there are plenty of other factors you should keep in mind as you venture out for the holiday.

Sgt. Chris Vollmer with the Lincoln Police Department said the weather plays a role in how many people are celebrating on Halloween, and it can make a difference in overall safety as well.

“Sometimes, Halloween is cold, icy, and the weather is terrible,” Vollmer said. “And other times, it’s beautiful and warm, and you have people out and about. Those things, I imagine, would play into a lot of how much foot traffic you have, how much vehicle traffic you have.”

If it’s your child’s first time trick-or-treating without an adult, make sure you have a good method of communication.

Vollmer said it’s safer if the child is comfortable in the neighborhood they’re walking around in.

“Make sure they’re in an area that they know so that if they do have a problem, they know where to go,” he said.

And if you still feel uneasy, Vollmer said a community event might be a good option.

Many Lincoln churches or organizations host trunk-or-treats. Vollmer said with those events, you can feel more confident in the candy your kids are getting and the people they interact with.

LPD will be helping with those events around town.

The department is also hosting its own trunk-or-treat on Oct. 24 at the Lancaster Event Center.
