Lack of snow in Lincoln area hurting snow removal businesses

CRETE, Neb. (KLKN) – It’s been 322 days since Lincoln has seen any measurable snow, posing a challenge for snow removal companies.

They are ready to clean driveways, roads, and parking lots.

But with no measurable snow to work with yet, many have been left with empty schedules and a mountain on uncertainty.

“It does make a guy sad to see very expensive snow equipment sitting not being used in the way that they’re meant to, just kind of out there in the lot collecting dust.” said Steven Delaney, owner of Yard Boss.

It hasn’t snowed a measurable amount since January, and with fewer storms, snow removal companies are now scrambling to stay afloat.

“We have employees that we pay, and when we don’t have snow, then it creates challenges and we don’t know what to have the guys do all winter,” Delaney said. “And we’re always looking for those things in the winter.”

Companies like Yard Boss diversified their services by offering things like fertilizer and lawn treatment, pest control and even hanging Christmas lights.

But is it enough to fill the void?

“Our goal is for through the month of November and first couple weeks of December we hand enough Christmas lights so that we can fill that void with the unpredictability that snow brings.” Delaney said.

Yard Boss told Channel 8 that winters in Nebraska are unpredictable, so it has to be prepared for anything.
