Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office investigating elaborate jury duty scam
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a jury duty scam.
In a press conference Friday morning, Chief Deputy Ben Houchin said the sheriff’s office was made aware of the scam around 8 a.m.
According to the sheriff’s office, an unknown caller is telling people they have a warrant for failing to appear for jury duty.
The scammer is identifying themselves as a lieutenant. The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office does not have lieutenants, Houchin said.
“Do not call this number,” Houchin said. “All you need to do is ignore it and delete it.”
Houchin said over 100 people have called the sheriff’s office expressing their concerns about this scam.
“We understand that there are concerns,” Houchin said. “We want to get this out to as many people as we can that this is a scam.”
Houchin said the sheriff’s office is trying to figure out how the scammer is getting people’s name and phone number.
The scam is under investigation.
