LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office is celebrating the retirement of one of its trusted canines.

K9 Dodge served as a patrol dog with the agency for over eight years.  Sgt. Kory Lehr was the dog’s handler.

“Today, we celebrate his incredible service and dedication serving our community with loyalty and courage,” the sheriff’s office said in a Facebook post.

The Lancaster County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday unanimously approved the transfer of Dodge’s ownership to Lehr.

“We’re happy that it gets to retire and stay with Kory,” Chief Deputy Ben Houchin said.

Houchin said the sheriff’s office is looking for a new K9 that will likely undergo training in Grand Island in April.
