Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office shares tips to stay safe in school zones
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – LPS students are set to resume classes next week, but Lancaster County deputies are already asking people to exercise extra caution in school zones.
Here are the safety tips they’re asking you to heed:
- OBEY POSTED SPEED LIMITS:
- Pay close attention to the reduced speed limits in school zones, typically 20 mph or as posted. Slow down and be prepared to stop at any moment.
- NO PASSING:
- Never pass other vehicles in a school zone, as children might unexpectedly enter the roadway.
- WATCH FOR SCHOOL ZONE SIGNS:
- Be vigilant for signs indicating the beginning and end of school zones. Observe all posted rules and regulations.
- STOP FOR CROSSWALKS:
- Always stop for pedestrians at crosswalks. Yield the right-of-way and allow them to cross safely.
- AVOID DOUBLE PARKING:
- It blocks visibility for children and other drivers.
- BE EXTRA CAUTIOUS:
- Watch out for children walking, biking, or waiting for buses. Kids can be unpredictable, so stay alert and ready to react.
- AVOID DISTRACTIONS:
- Put away your phone and other distractions while driving through school zones. Keep your full attention on the road.
- WATCH FOR SCHOOL BUSES:
- Be prepared to stop when you see school buses with flashing lights or extended stop arms. Children may be getting on or off the bus.
- BE PATIENT:
- School zones can be busy, but patience is crucial for everyone’s safety. Allow plenty of time for your commute and avoid rushing.
- DON’T BLOCK CROSSWALKS:
- It forces pedestrians to go around you and could put them in the path of moving traffic.
Prioritizing safety ensures a protective environment for both children and pedestrians.
