The Lancaster County Super Fair has officially gotten underway for 2018. Events started on Thursday and through the afternoon, animals were the main attraction.

Cows, goats, even camels and other exotic species were all on display for fair-goers. From animals for kids to pets, to 4-H events, there was a lot was a lot to see and learn. For some, these animals are more than just for show; they’re also friends and family. Just ask 10-year-old Christian Kaiser of Columbus.

"Her mother abandoned her for another cow, and she had nothing to do so I technically adopted her," said Kaiser.

Kaiser took in his lovable cow Missy Maybelle soon after she was born and now the two are best friends. Kaiser has been showing cows since he was seven and considers it a passion, but he also enjoys the other various creatures.

"I like showing cows because they’re mostly the easiest kind of animal," Kaiser said

Others in attendance, such as Kim Benes of Denton, weren’t raised in the farm life but married into it and have never looked back. Benes is from Omaha originally, but married her husband eight years ago and moved to the farm. Her mother-in-law convinced her and her husband to showcase their chickens at 4-H.

Now she and her family showcase their prized, award-winning chickens. She says events like 4-H and the county fair are a lot of fun and incredibly educational for people of all ages.

"It’s easy to do. Everyone’s nice and friendly. There’s always something to learn. There’s llamas, there’s goats, there’s something for everyone," said Benes.

She also encourages someone who is interested in raising chickens to look into it. She says it’s fun, and having fresh eggs every day is a nice perk.

Animals were not the only ones to receive prizes. The Lancaster County Ag Society Hall of Fame added two new members in Alan Wood and Marty Cruckshanks. The AKSARBEN Pioneer Farm Family award was given to Marj and Herle Huenink. That award is given to families that have owned and operated their family farmland for over 100 years.

The county fair runs until Sunday, so there is still plenty of time to get out and enjoy it.
