LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN/AP) – Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle on Thursday called for the removal of President Donald Trump from office.

Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, a Democrat from New York, released a statement saying Trump should “not hold office one day longer.”

“What happened at the U.S. Capitol yesterday was an insurrection against the United States, incited by the president,” the statement said. “This president should not hold office one day longer.“The quickest and most effective way – it can be done today – to remove this president from office would be for the Vice President to immediately invoke the 25th amendment. If the Vice President and the Cabinet refuse to stand up, Congress should reconvene to impeach the president.”

Schumer said Vice President Mike Pence and the Cabinet should invoke the 25th Amendment and immediately remove Trump from office. He added, “If the vice president and the Cabinet refuse to stand up, Congress should reconvene to impeach the president.”

Rep. Adam Kinzinger, a Republican from Illinois, called for the invocation of the 25th Amendment to remove the president.

“Sadly, yesterday it became clear that the president not only abdicated his duty to protect the American people and the people’s house, he invoked and inflamed passions that gave fuel to the insurrection we saw here,” he said in a video posted to Twitter. “When pressed to move and denounce the violence he barely did so, while, of course, victimizing himself.”

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez seconded Kinzinger’s comments.

“If the 25th Amendment is not invoked today, Congress must reconvene immediately for impeachment and removal proceedings,” she said.

Thursday afternoon, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi also called for invoking the 25th Amendment against Pres. Trump, saying “If the vice president and the cabinet do not act, the Congress may be prepared to move forward with impeachment.”
