Fire destroys south Lincoln home

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – A Lincoln home is a total loss after it caught fire Thursday.

Lincoln Fire & Rescue was sent around 4:20 p.m. to the home near 27th and Hoy streets, just south of Yankee Hill Road.

LFR spokeswoman MJ Lierman said flames were coming from the roof when crews arrived.

Eventually, the roof collapsed, and firefighters got out of the home due to safety concerns.

Lierman said strong winds were a challenge for firefighters.

The fire is out, but crews were expected to stay on scene throughout the night to monitor hot spots.

LFR thinks the fire started on a porch, but the cause is still under investigation.

The flames spread rapidly because of the high wind, Lierman said.

The home and its contents, estimated to be worth $850,000 total, were destroyed, according to LFR.

A firefighter was taken to a hospital with minor injuries, Lierman said, but has since been released.

The four people and one dog inside the home all made it out safely, she said.

One of the residents worked for the Nebraska Bank of Commerce, which has set up a fund for the family.
