Light snow to blowing snow with strong winds Tuesday
Most snowfall totals that were reported came from Monday afternoon, evening or night. Waiting on another round of reports to come later this morning and afternoon once the snow stops, though it’ll be more difficult to measure in the strong wind. Here’s more updates to the totals we’ve gathered so far.
Blizzard warnings were downgraded overnight. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for central Nebraska through 9 a.m. Tuesday for lingering light snow that will end but winds gusting at 30 to 40 mph. A Winter Storm Warning continues until about noon for almost all of eastern Nebraska for additional snow up to 2″ through the morning and wind gusts up to 45 mph.
Streets were actively being worked early Tuesday, with some refrozen slush and snow-packed conditions. Just after 4 a.m. and all the roads in eastern Nebraska were completely covered. For the latest on road conditions, check here. Light snow through the rest of the morning will likely cause visibility issues through the morning drive, if you’ve got to be out and about.
The snow will exit the area completely by the afternoon, but colder air settles in and is here to stay for a while.
Additional snow amounts past 5 a.m. Tuesday will be minimal compared to what we’ve already seen fall across much of eastern Nebraska.
Winds will be at their worst through the morning hours, then gradually come down into Tuesday evening.
Wind chills will be either a few degrees below zero or a few degrees above for much of the day. We saw our warmest temperatures for the day around midnight in the upper 20s, with temperatures expected to fall throughout the day in and around the lower 20s during the afternoon.
Another round of accumulating snow will be possible by the second half of Thursday into Friday. That, and much colder air will cause temperatures to plummet into this weekend and early next week. Yes, highs only in the single digits start as soon as Friday.
As you can imagine, overnight lows will be that much colder (below zero) along with dangerous wind chills around -20 to -40 Friday night and beyond across the state.
