LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – The Lincoln Airport is receiving a funding boost from the U.S. Department of Transportation to fund the reconstruction of one of its runways.

On Friday, the Department of Transportation announced that the Lincoln Airport would receive a $41 million grant through the Airport Improvement Program.

In a news release from Sen. Deb Fischer, officials said the funding will support the final phase and reconstruction of Runway 18/36 at the airport.

The Department of Defense, along with the Nebraska National Guard, utilizes the runway for military missions due to its “significant length.”

“I’m pleased that, after much steady advocacy, the Lincoln Airport will receive the funds necessary to complete the refurbishment of one of its runways that plays a crucial role in the operations of our Nebraska National Guard and other national security missions,” Fischer said in a statement. “This has been many years in the making, and I look forward to seeing this project come to a final completion.”

Fischer had recently met with President Donald Trump’s FAA Administrator, Bryan Bedford, to advocate for the runway refurbishment.
