Lincoln Airport working nonstop to keep runway and taxiway clear of snow

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – With two winter storms in a matter of days, there was no rest for the weary at the Lincoln Airport on Friday.

Crews have been working around the clock since Monday to keep snow off of the runway.

Chad Neuhalfen, superintendent of facilities and maintenance, said just when workers were about done from the last storm, this one hit.

The crews have to keep at least one runway and taxiway open at all times in case a plane needs to make an emergency landing.

Visibility was a challenge on Friday.  Planes have navigational instruments, but plow truck drivers rely on their sight, and that can be a challenge with blowing snow.

“It can put the guys a little on edge, especially when we run these plows three or four together,” Neuhalfen said. “You think it’s bad looking straight out here. For the guys being the second or third plow, it can be pretty challenging.”

He said he’s incredibly thankful to every one of the crew members, who are working long shifts and have been since Monday.
