Lincoln bookstore hosts story hour with drag queen

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – On Sunday afternoon, the Indigo Bridge bookstore hosted its first “Drag Story Hour” of 2024.

The event is designed to be an age-appropriate reading where drag performers share stories for anyone to enjoy.

Drag Queen Babygirl Uchawi read several books, including “I am Courage: A Book of Resilience” and “I Want to Be Spaghetti!”

She’s been doing these story hour events for about three years and started in Omaha.

“Drag is so much more than what a lot of people perceive it to be,” Uchawi said. “We’re all just playing dress-up, at the end of the day. And I think the kids really get that and they love it.”

She said it’s important to have these kinds of inclusive spaces in Lincoln.

“Drag isn’t scary; queer culture isn’t scary,” she said. “Come and sit for story. I would love so many people, especially in the legislature – senators that oppose this – come take a visit and see what this is all about.”

Uchawi said if you’re a Drag Queen and would like to do a show, don’t be afraid to reach out.

Indigo Bridge will be hosting more shows on the first Sunday of every month at 2 p.m.

The events are free, but the bookstore will be accepting donations to help fund future story hours.
