Lincoln East rallies to defeat Lincoln Southeast

Channel 8's Game of the Week

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – The latest battle in the intracity rivalry between Lincoln Southeast and Lincoln East took place Friday night at Seacrest field.

Both teams came into the game with a loss and looking to “right the ship,” and East came from behind to win 21-14.

The game was a stalemate all the way until late in the second quarter.

Southeast’s Max Buettenback took the handoff and cut through the defense, getting wrapped up by a host of defenders, but he wouldn’t go down.

He got the Knights all the way to the 3-yard line.

Southeast scored the first points of the game a few plays later for a 7-0 lead.

Later, with 41 seconds left in the first half, Southeast’s Owen Baxter passed to Manny Appleget, who made the catch in the end zone to give the Knights a two-touchdown advantage.

Lincoln East would not score at all in the first half, due to a missed field goal in the first quarter.

But by the fourth quarter, East was only down by a touchdown.

Jeter Worthley kept it himself and scampered to the end zone to tie the game at 14.

Southeast tried to get down the field to take the lead back, but the Spartan defense caused a fumble and recovered the ball.

East went down the field and got the ball to the 2-yard line.

Worthley again kept it himself and fought for every inch of grass to get across the goal line.

The Spartans took the lead for the first time, going up 21-14.

The Knights later had a chance to tie but faced a fourth-and-1 with one minute left and no timeouts.

But the snap was fumbled, and East got the ball back.

Lincoln East coach John Gingery said he told his players at halftime that their mistakes cost them.

“If we don’t turn the ball over and keep the ball, we’ll be in good shape,” he said. “As hot as it is, they got big guys, I said fatigue is going to play in this. We just have to play our game.”

Sophomore QB Jeter Worthley, echoed his coach by saying it was a tough first half and credited his receivers to the win, even though he scored all three touchdowns himself!

East takes on Lincoln Southwest next week.

Southeast travels to Papillion-LaVista.
