Lincoln East student’s art selected for display at US Capitol
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – A Lincoln high school junior’s artwork will be on display on the U.S. Capitol.
Each spring, the Congressional Institute sponsors a nationwide high school competition that recognizes artistic talent in each congressional district.
This year’s winner for Nebraska’s 1st Congressional District was Cheryl Zeng, a junior at Lincoln East High School.
Her piece depicts the Sower on top of the Nebraska State Capitol.
“Someone asked me where Nebraska was, and if we rode horses, and so I really wanted to demonstrate the prestige and the great things that are happening in Nebraska,” Zeng said.
A committee of art teachers narrowed down the three best art pieces, and Rep. Mike Flood picked Zeng’s as his favorite.
“I love the fact that the Sower is going to be in the Capitol,” Flood said. “Every member of Congress passes by this art every single day.”
Since the Artistic Discovery competition began in 1982, more than 650,000 high school students have participated.
