Lincoln expert says now is the perfect time to start your Spring garden

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Spring has arrived and so begins the busy season for nurseries as people hope to start planting.
Jessica Jasnoch, manager at Earl May Garden Center on South 48th street, said Easter weekend is usually a good marker for planting potatoes, as well as Cole crops like broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower.
You can also start Brussel sprouts, onions, radishes, and lettuce sometime within the next month as well.
Jasnoch said it’s best to plant your seedlings in a spot with loose soil where they can get eight hours of sunlight per day.
And with the lack of rain, be sure to check the soil daily and make sure it’s moist in order for seeds to germinate.
She said there’s a number of flowers you can get started on right now too.
“We’re safe to plant pansies, that’s everyone’s favorite Spring flower,” Jasnoch said. “We’re getting into where geraniums and petunias would be safe, but still watch those nighttime temps ’cause we still have a lot of opportunity for winter yet.”
If temps are going to dip below 30-35 degrees, she said either cover your plants up or bring them inside.
Jasnoch also said it’s best to hold off on vine crops like tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, or watermelons until the weather warms up in May.
You can also put down pre-emergent herbicides now to prevent crab grass and other weeds from growing on your lawn and flowerbeds.
