Lincoln experts say security systems help prevent break-ins, track down suspects
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Lincoln Crime Stoppers shared details Wednesday of an attempted break-in from earlier this month.
Security video captured a woman banging on the doors and windows at a home near 21st and F streets.
One of the residents was home but didn’t recognize the woman and later called the police.
Jared Minary, a forensic video technician with the Lincoln Police Department, said this is one scenario where having security cameras is helpful.
“Security systems are one of the best things you can probably do this day and age for your home safety,” he said.
Minary said it’s also helpful to have a smart doorbell that can communicate both ways.
He said that allows you to answer your door without actually opening it.

Tony Thurman, owner of Cornhusker Security Systems, said being able to provide an image to law enforcement makes it easier to track down a suspect.
And during the holiday season, having cameras, alarms and smart lights can be a deterrent to porch pirates looking to steal packages.
“I get neighbors who are interested in cameras that can view the street as well who feel a sense of responsibility for their neighborhood,” Thurman said. “The more cameras, the more signs of vigilance, the less attractive a neighborhood is.”
Minary said if you do get a security system, it’s best to get something that will record 24/7. Otherwise, get a camera that records when motion is detected.

He added that you’ll want to make sure the video is stored somewhere and can be saved after an incident.
“Every case that goes to court, one of the first questions an attorney will ask is, ‘Is there video in this case?'” Minary said. “Cause it makes a difference for both prosecution and defense because you can potentially see what happens from start to finish.”
