UPDATE: South Lincoln house fire caused by items left on top of stove

UPDATE: Lincoln Fire and Rescue says Sunday mornings duplex fire was caused by combustible objects left on top of a stove.

According to fire inspector Rick Campos objects were left on the stoves burner which somehow got turned on, then igniting the objects.

Five people were inside the home when the fire started shortly before 4 a.m. and they all made it out, but the family’s dog died in the fire. The family on the other side of the duplex also made it out safely.

Each side of the duplex did have working smoke detectors, but neither family had renters insurance.

Inspector Campos said the fire caused over $80,000 in damage to the left side of the duplex leaving it unlivable. The right side had only minor smoke damage.

Inspector Campos says this serves as a reminder to never leave anything on top of the top and to always have renters insurance.

The residents of the side of the duplex where the fire started have three young children and lost all of their belongings. If you’d like to help the family click here: https://www.facebook.com/donate/203569790549410/10210990911403663/

A Lincoln family will be looking for a new place to spend the holidays after an early morning fire ripped through their home.

Lincoln Fire and Rescue responded to a house fire just before 4 a.m. Sunday morning near 40th and Old Cheney.

“We arrived to find fire in the kitchen of a duplex type property and were able to contain fire to the room of origin,” LFR fire captain Carl Campbell said.

According to Captain Carl five people were inside when the fire started, but they all made it out and were outside when fire crews arrived.

LFR was able to extinguish the flames quickly, but the half of the duplex where the fire started sustained heavy smoke and water damage leaving it unlivable.

The other half of the duplex sustained light smoke damage, but was not damaged by the fire.

LFR is still investigating what sparked the early morning blaze.
