Lincoln Fire & Rescue shares decorating tips to keep homes safe this Halloween

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Lincoln Fire & Rescue is providing tips for homeowners to keep their dwellings safe this Halloween.

The National Fire Protection Association reports that decorations, including candles, spark roughly 800 home fires each year.

Instead of an open flame candle, LFR spokeswoman MJ Lierman said people can use glowsticks or battery-operated candles in jack-o-lanterns.

“Open flames can cause fires really, really quickly, and spread really quickly in the dry conditions we have,” Lierman said.

For homeowners with firepits, Lierman said to make sure they’re covered up during this time of year.

Lierman also said people should keep Halloween decorations away from open flames and heat sources like light bulbs and heaters.
