Lincoln homeowner wakes up to flooding in his basement

The ground is saturated with rainwater and is finding more creative places to end up. Flooding will be a common problem for Lincoln homeowners for the following week.
Lincoln resident Bo Fuller woke up just in time Tuesday morning to make it down to his basement to find a window blown open from the high winds and rain.
“This was actually, was down, and was actually at an angle. It was just popped open and the water was just rolling down, rolling down,” Fuller said.
The water damage was extensive to about $5,000. His family banded together quickly to help him drain the water as quick as possible.
“Things happen and we just have to tackle it, take care of it, and move on,” Fuller said.
Restorations companies are working hard and fast to meet the many calls after the Monday night rain. Lorrie Struve with Paul Davis Restoration wants to remind homeowners that there are some steps we can take to prevent basement flooding.
“So the main thing i tell people is make sure that your eaves, gutters are clean, clear of obstructions, make sure leaves are taken out of there so you have a nice flow of rain water going through the system that you have in place in your home,” Struve said.
If you do have a drain tile or sump pump, check their effectiveness regularly. They are the best ways to combat basement flooding. However, if your foundation has trouble with leakage, put plastic bags on your furniture legs or invest in wooden blocks they can stand on, to be off the floor.
“Then the main important thing is running fans so you’ve got some air movement and de-humidification going on, those are the next steps you would take to dry the basement out,” Struve Said.
For future homeowners, always make sure your foundation is higher up and the area around your home is sloping down.
