All Lincoln Hy-Vees are offering flu shots for the upcoming season. They started last week and will continue through the season.
Even though it’s still August, is it too early to think about getting a flu shot? No, according to medical professionals.
"I think you should start thinking about it now. It takes a little while for the antibodies to build up into the system, so I would get it now so and you’re ahead of it when it hits full force," said Dr. Jeff Weyers of Hy-Vee Pharmacies.
Most insurance covers flu shots and Hy-Vee does accept medicare. The Hy-Vee located at 84th and Holdredge has already given nearly 50 shots.
What can be done now to help protect ourselves during peak flu season, especially children?
"I would say teaching them if they have to sneeze, sneeze properly, sneeze into their arm," said Dr. Weyers. "Also, make sure that they’re washing their hands constantly, and if you can keep them away from people already have the flu."
It’s important to note that it takes a couple weeks before the body develops enough antibodies to properly fight the flu.
