Lincoln kids enjoying snow day are ‘glad that Nebraska weather finally came through’

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – The snow came down hard Thursday morning, but that didn’t stop both kids and adults across Lincoln from making the most of their snow day.

At Pioneers Park, hundreds of people came to sled down the hills and the built-in ramps.

“I think it’s awesome; the snow’s pretty great,” 12-year-old Caden said. “It’s a little fluffy at first, but if you keep riding the same line, it’ll pack down and gets faster and more smooth.”

Residents said it’s been a long time since they’ve had snow like this, so they’re making the most of it.

“I love it,” said Ellie, a Lincoln resident. “We wanted to go snowboarding, but the resort’s closed, so we just decided to go sledding instead. Still pretty fun.”

Caden said he was glad to hear that school had been canceled because he wasn’t sure at first if they were going to get the day off.

“I’m really lucky, and I’m glad that Nebraska weather finally came through,” he said. “I woke up, and I still didn’t know — usually they tell us the night before — but today I was lucky, and they were able to tell us right in the morning that school was off.”

He said it was his first time at Pioneers Park, so he was really excited to come out with the other kids and try it out, especially the ramps.

“When we came out here, the ramps looked kinda not so amazing, like they had kind of the wood showing,” Caden said. “And then we packed snow into it so it would start to go faster and faster over time.”

Caden said the ramps made it a lot easier to get some speed, and he’s working on his strategy to go as fast and as far as possible.

“I think it’s a great design, and it’s going straight down and giving us a lot of speed going down the hill,” he said. “The hill isn’t steep at first, but if you can clear the top and get to the bottom, that’s where it really gets steep.”

Caden and many others spent hours at the park, maximizing their fun in the winter wonderland.
