Lincoln law enforcement builds relationships with community on National Night Out
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Communities across the country celebrated National Night Out on Tuesday, including Lincoln.
The annual event is aimed at building safer neighborhoods by strengthening relationships with police and first responders.
Capt. Tarvis Banks said it’s important for him to build connections with young people in the city.
“It’s awesome because I grew up in Lincoln,” Banks said. “It’s nice to come back and reconnect that way as well.”
One mother, Tiffany Back, took her daughters to the event.
She said it can really make an impact on how kids view law enforcement.
“Just showing that there’s still good cops out here,” Back said. “Just getting them around the community and letting them know there’s people you can count on.”
It’s an opportunity for everyone to grow the relationship between the community and those who serve it.
Jean Gerlach, the director of the F Street Community Center, said it’s an opportunity for everyone to grow closer.
“That’s what National Night Out is all about,” she said. “Getting to know your neighbors and feeling safe in your community.”
The Air Park Community Center also had information booths with local organizations like the Mental Health Association of Nebraska.
The Calvert Recreation Center had pizza and outdoor games, and Arnold Heights Pool offered a free family swim night.
