LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — A Lincoln man pleaded not guilty Thursday to writing bad checks to buy exotic animals.

Matthew White, 38, entered the plea at his arraignment in Madison County District Court.

His attorney asked that his $25,000 bond be reduced, but Judge James Kube rejected the request.

White remains in custody and must pay $2,500 to be released.

He sells animals for a living, according to court documents, and wrote a $6,250 check in November at a Norfolk livestock auction.

White bought two kangaroos, an alpaca and a donkey.

But the check was from an account that had closed, according to court documents.

He then wrote another bad check for the same amount and later missed multiple chances to pay for the animals, the Madison County Sheriff’s Office said.

A warrant for his arrest was issued in January, and he was arrested on March 29.

White is charged with issuing a bad check of $5,000 or more, which is a felony.

His next hearing is set for May 20. His trial is set to begin July 8.
