Lincoln man’s failure to stop led to crash that killed 4 people, authorities say
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — The Cass County Sheriff’s Office said a Lincoln man failed to stop on Tuesday night, leading to the crash that claimed four lives near Greenwood.
Authorities said 34-year-old Hugo Buendia was traveling west on Church Road when he drove through a stop sign at 238th Street.
That’s where they say he was hit by another vehicle driven by 22-year-old Justin Wiederin from Omaha.
Buendia was pronounced dead after a deputy arrived, along with 39-year-old Alejandro Valverde and 28-year-old Ricardo Jimenez, who had been thrown from the vehicle.
Isaac Valverde, 40, died before first responders were able to transport him.
The Mexican Consulate in Omaha said the four men killed were members of the same family.
The Cass County Sheriff’s Office said alcohol is believed to be a factor.
The Nebraska State Patrol said a preliminary breath test found no alcohol in Wiederin’s blood.
The county attorney has requested an autopsy for Buendia.
The crash is still under investigation which could take up to 45 days.
A manager from Speedee Mart, a gas station near the scene, said it is a dangerous intersection.
“Coming up on the hill, the stop sign kind of stick up on you,” Caileen Short said. “I have a lot of employees that are scared, or that say it is a dangerous intersection.”
