Lincoln Middle School Teens Discuss Body Image
According to a nationwide study by the Health and Human services, 80 percent of 10-year-old American girls diet. The number of girls who say they are happy with themselves drops by half between elementary and high school. 27percent say they are happy.
By the time a girl reaches age 17, she will have been exposed to more than 250-thousand commercial messages. So how does this constant bombardment of images affect girls in middle school? Whether they come from television or magazines, images trying to sell a product are everywhere. These images may cause low self esteem and eating disorders in some impressionable people.
Doctors say this thought process is normal. Over half of the advertisements in teen magazines and TV commercials aimed at female viewers use beauty as a means to sell a product. The young girls we spoke with say they acknowledge the media pushes unnatural body types.
