Lincoln native Rutger McGroarty selected 14th overall in NHL draft
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Lincoln native Rutger McGroarty made Nebraska history Thursday night when he was selected 14th overall in the NHL draft by the Winnipeg Jets.
McGroarty grew up in Lincoln, where his dad was a coach and general manager of the Lincoln Stars.
“I just like to show that, hey, I’m a kid from Nebraska, a nontraditional hockey market,” McGroarty said. “I want to inspire other kids from those nontraditional hockey markets.”
He is a product of the U.S. National Team development program and is committed to play hockey at Michigan.
According to ESPN, McGroarty is just the seventh player from Nebraska to ever be drafted and the first since 2013.
