Lincoln neighborhood on high alert after dog attack

A Lincoln neighborhood is on high alert after a dog was attacked and killed earlier this week.
The identity of the attacker is still a bit of a mystery.
On Tuesday, pet owner Judy Grant returned home and was met with shock after discovering her 3 and a half year old dog, Indie, was attacked.
“She was already in shock and glazed. She had slash wounds across her jaw, her throat, her upper chest and outside of her arms,” said Grant.
Unfortunately, Indie didn’t survive her injuries.
Grant says the veterinarian who examined the wounds concluded that they were caused by a large cat, potentially a mountain lion.
Animal Control came to look for evidence in Grant’s backyard, but found none.
They suggested that it could have been an attack from one of her other dogs, but Grant disagrees.
“We have never had any aggression issues, and they are bonded, so I don’t feel that that is a possibility,” said Grant.
The attack happened in the back yard of the Grant home in the Highlands of Northwest Lincoln near Burt street and West Fletcher Avenue.
The backyard has a private six foot high fence and a locked gate.
Grant believes something large and dangerous was able to get inside.
“The injuries I think, kind of speak for themselves. This wasn’t a raccoon or a possum or a smaller animal, my dog is 60 pounds; she is good sized and these were large wounds,” said Grant.
Mountain lion or not, Grant wants the neighborhood to be on high alert.
“Pay attention because at 60 pounds that could be a small child just as well as a dog,” says Grant.
The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission also investigated the dog’s death. They concluded that there was no evidence of a mountain lion attack. The organization says they have investigated more than 100 mountain lion sightings in Lancaster County and never confirmed that a mountain lion was in the area.
