Lincoln nonprofit helping at-risk youth hosts free Fourth of July event
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — A local nonprofit helping at-risk youth hosted a free Fourth of July event for kids and young people in Lincoln on Tuesday.
The Honesty Project wanted to bring awareness to the work it does in our community.
President Clayton Anders said he started the nonprofit after his niece died from fentanyl.
“We knew then it was time to do something about what was going on with these youth and all the problems that they’re facing,” he said.
The event had music, free food, free haircuts and plenty of fun activities.
Law enforcement representatives were also at the event.
Anders said it is important to have law enforcement involved in activities to help build positive connections.
Chief Deputy Ben Houchin with the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office said officers want everyone to know that they’re normal people and that they want the best for youth.
State senators were also there on Tuesday. Sen. Kathleen Kauth said she’s all for helping the nonprofit grow.
“Trying to make sure that their organization is able to grow steadily and successfully,” Kauth said.
