Lincoln officer honored for saving drowning woman from Holmes Lake

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – A Lincoln officer was celebrated Monday for his heroic efforts in a water rescue last year.

Officer Pierce Krouse jumped into action on Nov. 5 after a woman tipped over in a canoe at Holmes Lake.

He jumped into the frigid water and swam about 30 yards from shore to save the woman.

Krouse then went home, showered, changed into dry clothes and got back to work.

Fellow water rescuer Sgt. Tu Tran nominated Krouse for the Mayor’s Award of Excellence.

“Officer Krouse’s quick and heroic actions most definitely saved this person’s life as fatigue and hypothermia were setting in and the outcome would have been much different,” he wrote. “We are proud of Officer Krouse’s selfless actions and his willingness to risk his own safety for others.”

At a Lincoln City Council meeting, Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird presented Krouse with the award, which includes a $50 gift certificate and a paid day off work.

Acting Police Chief Michon Morrow said the rescue “encapsulates” all that the Lincoln Police Department does for the community.

“We’re just exceptionally proud of you for the bravery and quick action,” she said.
