LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — The Lincoln Police Department on Friday announced the increase in speeding fines for the first time since 1996.

According to LPD, Lincoln Municipal Code has been updated to reflect a new state law increasing the fines associated with speeding violations.

The increased fines — along with additional court costs — are as follows:

  • $50 for 1-5 mph over (up from $10)
  • $75 for 6-10 mph over (up from $25)
  • $125 for 11-15 mph over (up from $75)
  • $200 for 16-20 mph over (up from $125)
  • $300 for 21-35 mph over (up from $200)
  • $400 for 36+ mph over (up from $300)

For 1-20 mph over, the fines will be doubled if the violation occurs in a school zone or a maintenance/repair/construction zone.

“To better align with today’s economy, speeding fines have been adjusted for the first time since 1996,” LPD said in a statement. “According to our Traffic Sergeant, since 2020, we’ve seen a trend of increasingly dangerous speeds.”

Lincoln Police also said it hopes the rise in prices will act as a deterrent for drivers who choose to speed.

The police department doesn’t keep any of the money for speeding fines. Instead, it goes to the school district, according to LPD.
