A Lincoln police officer is recovering after he and two other other officers were assaulted by a man during a traffic stop late Wednesday night.
LPD says they received a call around 11:30 p.m. that a man at the McDonald’s drive thru at 345 West O St was drinking alcohol and driving. The man, 35-year-old Dennis Brewer, was stopped by police at 9th and Rosa Parks after police saw him driving with no headlights and making an improper turn.
Brewer already had a warrant. When he was asked to step out of his car he became uncooperative and began to fight the officer. A second officer arrived to help diffuse the situation. Brewer ignored multiple commands to stop. After being wrestled to the ground, Brewer reached for his waistband. Officers feared that he was getting a weapon.
Both officers were on Brewer’s back when Brewer threw grabbed one and threw him over his shoulder causing the officer to land on his head on the concrete and begin bleeding. Soon, a third officer arrived and the struggle continued for a few more minutes before Brewer was finally apprehended.
The other two officers suffered minor injuries to their knees, hands, and elbows. Brewer complained of chest pain and was taken to the hospital where he was soon cleared.
Police found three meth pipes, 0.3 grams of suspected meth, a trace amount of pot, and an open alcohol container.
Brewer was arrested for three assaults on an officer, felony resistance of arrest from a prior conviction, and possession of a controlled substance.
