Lincoln Police remain committed to traffic enforcement despite shortage
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – The Lincoln Police Department is committed to keeping roads safe despite a shortage in its traffic unit.
In a social media post Monday, Police Chief Michon Morrow discussed why traffic unit officers are being reassigned to other areas.
“To be transparent with the community, currently our traffic unit is assigned to community-based policing teams, due to staffing concerns,” Morrow said. “We are balancing the workload until we have the staffing available to completely fill our traffic unit.”

A fully staffed traffic team has nine members, but right now there are only three.
Sgt. Sara Genoways, who leads the agency’s traffic unit, said road safety is something every officer focuses on.
“With the Lincoln Police Department, we do have expectations of our officers that they remain productive, and one of the best ways to stay productive is in traffic safety and traffic enforcement,” she said.
LPD has seen an increase in people reporting traffic problems on its website.
“Every complaint that I get where there is enough information for us to have some enforcement on it, it will get assigned to an officer,” Genoways said.
Morrow said the goal is to have the traffic unit fully staffed by 2025.
