LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – With the school year approaching, additional officers will be out to keep kids safe around Lincoln schools.

The Lincoln Police Department announced Monday it would begin the “Back to School” Traffic Safety Enforcement Project on the first day of school, Aug. 15.

Lincoln Police say the additional enforcement will be funded by a grant from the Nebraska Department of Transportation-Highway Safety Office.

Officers will be placed at schools across the city to help keep drivers and kids safe.

Police are encouraging drivers to be aware of flashing yellow lights and speed limits around school zones.

They say fines of $600 could be given for speeding through school zones during times of operation.

The project is scheduled to end on Sept. 9.
