Lincoln Police urge drivers to slow down in school zones — or face $600 fine
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Lincoln Police are working to keep kids safe this school year with a new enforcement project.
The Back To School Traffic Enforcement Project will place additional officers at schools across the city to help with traffic and pedestrian safety.
Thanks to a grant from the Nebraska Department of Transportation’s Highway Safety Office, officers will be on the lookout for traffic violations at local schools.
Officers are assigned to look for drivers speeding through school zones, passing by school bus warning devices and not wearing seat belts.
Police say drivers who speed through a school zone could be fined up to $600.
Drivers are encouraged to be aware of flashing yellow lights and obey speed limits around elementary, middle and high schools.
They should be extra cautious from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 4 p.m., hours when children are often traveling to or from school.
Police also remind drivers to expect increased traffic and slowdowns while in school zones.
The project, which began on Monday, is set to last until Sept. 9.
