LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — The Lincoln Police Department is warning the public about a phone scam where the caller is claiming to be an LPD Sergeant.

On Monday, a Lincoln man received a call from a Lincoln phone number claiming to be LPD Sgt. Jeremy Carr.

The caller told him he missed jury duty, violated laws and had a warrant out for his arrest.

According to LPD, the scammer instructed the victim to make a payment via Apple Pay to address the warrant.

The man did not make any payment and hung up, LPD said.

As a reminder, LPD said they will reach out to individuals with warrants in person, not over the phone, and will not request electronic payments via platforms like Apple Pay, PayPal, Venmo, etc..

Additionally, there is no Sgt. Jeremy Carr at LPD.

If you are unsure of someone’s identity claiming to be law enforcement, it is always okay to hang up and call dispatch at 402-441-6000 to confirm the name and badge number provided, along with the attempt to contact you.
