Lincoln Public Schools hosts second annual athletic safety training
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Lincoln Public Schools hosted its second annual athletic safety training course at Seacrest Field this week.
The training is a partnership with an organization called The National Center for Spectator Sports Safety and Security, a branch of the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
The organization teaches athletic staff how to deal with emergency situations like severe weather and active assailants.
The district completed phase two of the six-course session on Friday. It will do phase three next summer.
Kyle Poore, the LPS security coordinator, believes this training is essential for all schools.
“The ultimate goal is, ‘How do we move large crowds of people and do that in a safe manner?'” he said. “They really broke it down into a few pieces, such as, ‘Are we going to evacuate or find somewhere on-site that’s safe such as a vehicle or a school bus?'”
LPS has specific protocols for emergency situations that occur indoors that it is working on adapting to emergencies that occur outside.
The trainings are given in a classroom format with open discussions and hands-on drills at various locations around the city.
Schools from all around Nebraska sent representatives out for the training.
