Lincoln Public Schools urges all parents to fill out a free and reduced meals form

The district recommends completing an application right away after federal program ends

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — LPS is urging all parents districtwide to fill out a free and reduced meals application as quickly as possible.

Officials want to make sure you’re not caught off-guard by potentially unexpected expenses less than a month from now.

The notice comes after a federal program that covered free meals ended this summer, following passage of the Keep Kids Fed Act.

Despite the name of the law, some parents might have to sacrifice to be certain their children aren’t going hungry.

The school meals program is now tied to an income-based system that you may not qualify under.

So millions of American families that didn’t have to pay anything to make sure kids got the nutrition their growing bodies need may have to redo budgets.

On top of that, LPS recently raised the price of lunch.

You can find more details about free and reduced meals, as well as the application, here.
