Lincoln residents donate used bikes for a good cause

The Lincoln Bike Kitchen asked Lincoln residents to donate their gently used bikes Thursday evening in honor of ‘America Recycles’ day.

The community-building organization works to provide bicycles and related resources to all people, especially children in the Lincoln area.

Rich Horner of Lincoln not only volunteered at the event Thursday evening, but also donated a bike that he was no longer using.

“I had a bike that’s not being used, that needed some work on it and that’s just sitting in my garage,” Horner said. “So I got rid of it and it’s going to be put to use.”

Those who were unable to donate but still wanted to contribute were encouraged to volunteer or donate money.

Last year they received around 75 bikes from people in the community.

Christine Cerny, the president of the Lincoln Bike Kitchen, spoke fondly of members in the community who donated their used bikes.

“I feel thankful that they are thinking about something they have in their garage, that might not be of use to them, and making such a huge difference in a small child’s life, because for many of our children this will be their Christmas gift,” Cerny said.

Those interested in donating bikes can do so through Thurs., Dec. 19 on Mondays, 5-8 p.m, or Sundays 12-3 p.m.
